Commence alors une longue controverse, au cours de laquelle Galilée s'aliène ses plus fervents soutiens, tel le pape Urbain VIII. Finalement condamné pour hérésie pour avoir défendu l'héliocentrisme copernicien contre le sens littéral des Écritures, Galilée n'a été réhabilité qu'en 1992 par le pape Jean-Paul II.
