La retransmission historique en direct de Mary Martin en 1956 sous le nom de PETER PAN, est généralement considérée comme la performance définitive de cette comédie musicale bien-aimée. Seulement neuf jours après la fin de la première série de Broadway, les acteurs et l'équipe (sous la supervision du réalisateur Jerome Robbins) se sont réunis dans les grands studios de Brooklyn de la NBC pour présenter le spectacle en direct à la télévision. Décrivant l'énorme succès de cette télédiffusion, Cyril Ritchard (Captain Hook) a noté "... ce n'était pas seulement une performance télévisuelle, c'était une production de scène apportée aux caméras." Un an plus tard, en préparation de la deuxième retransmission en direct de PETER PAN, les mêmes acteurs se retrouvèrent pour plusieurs représentations au Ambassador Theatre de New York pour un public d'enfants invités. Cela a donné à la diffusion de 1956 la même qualité théâtrale que la première.
