The story is set in Illyria, fictional central European country, towards the end of World War II. A young man infiltrates into the house of a left-wing politician as his secretary. By order of the Communist party, the young man has to kill the politician, who is suspected of a strategy of compromise with other parties.

Alors que Prem, découragé, se résout à jeter un plat sur lequel il a travaillé dur avec ses camarades, il tombe sur Ten, un étudiant en médecine épuisé et affamé qui l'a mis en difficulté plus tôt. Prem, qui n'a pas du tout envie de le revoir, est très surpris quand il le supplie de lui donner des cours de cuisine après avoir goûté son plat. Tout d'abord complètement réfractaire à cette idée, il finit par accepter à cause d'un problème financier. Au fil du temps, les recettes de cuisine font place à d'autres sentiments... Mais les raisons qui ont poussé Ten à apprendre à cuisiner pourraient bien être un obstacle à leur rapprochement.
